Why convert GPA to percentage?

Many scholarship applications, job applications, and international university admissions require percentage marks rather than a GPA. If your transcript shows a GPA, this tool gives you the equivalent percentage to report on applications — without guesswork.

Common situations where you need your GPA as a percentage: Indian government job applications (which use a percentage basis), scholarship portals that ask for marks out of 100, and some university admission forms that do not accept GPA directly.

Conversion formulas by scale

Different GPA scales use different formulas to derive a percentage equivalent:

  • US 4.0 scale: Most common approximation is Percentage = (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100. So a 3.5 GPA ≈ 87.5%. Some sources use (GPA − 0.5) × 25 for a slightly different result.
  • India 10-point (UGC/CBSE): Official CBSE formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So an 8.2 CGPA = 77.9%. Some universities use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
  • 5.0 scale: Percentage = (GPA ÷ 5.0) × 100. A 4.0 on a 5-point scale ≈ 80%.

No universal standard exists — always verify the formula your specific institution or application portal expects. The values this calculator uses follow the most widely accepted approximations for each scale.

Is the conversion exact?

No. No universal standard for converting GPA to percentage exists — different universities and institutions use different formulas. This tool uses the most widely accepted approximations for each scale. If you need an official figure for an application, check with your registrar or the application portal's own guidance first.

How do Indian universities calculate percentage from CGPA?

Most universities affiliated to CBSE use the formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.0 = 76%. Some universities instead use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which gives a slightly different result. Select "India 10-point" in the calculator for the CBSE standard formula.

What percentage is a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale?

Using the standard formula (GPA ÷ 4.0) × 100, a 3.5 GPA equals 87.5%. Some approximation tables use 88–89% for a 3.5. Always clarify with the organisation requesting the percentage which formula they expect.

Do employers accept GPA instead of percentage?

It depends on the country and employer. Most US companies accept GPA directly. Many Indian and South Asian employers, government departments, and scholarship bodies specifically require a percentage. In those cases, use the converted figure — and optionally include both on your application.

Can I convert CGPA to percentage the same way?

Yes — CGPA is just a cumulative GPA across multiple semesters. If your CGPA is on a 10-point Indian scale, use the India 10-point option. If it's on a 4.0 scale, use the standard US 4.0 option. The formula is the same regardless of whether the GPA is for one semester or cumulative.
