Does word count include references and footnotes?
It depends on the assignment instructions and institution. Many universities explicitly state whether references, footnotes, appendices, titles, and headings are included in the word count. The default assumption varies — some count everything, some exclude bibliography. If the instructions are unclear, email your instructor or check your department's style guide before submitting.

What counts as a word?
In standard word count, a word is any sequence of characters separated by spaces. Hyphenated words (well-being) are typically counted as one word. Numbers written as digits (2026) count as one word. Contractions (don't) count as one word. Most word processors and this counter follow the same convention, so counts should match within 1–2 words of Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
How do I reduce word count without losing meaning?
The most effective cuts: remove redundant qualifiers ("very", "quite", "really", "in order to"), cut passive voice in favour of active, eliminate throat-clearing intros ("It is important to note that..."), and merge sentences that make the same point. Aim to cut 10–15% on first pass — most academic writing is improved by tighter expression.
How many words per minute does the average student read?
Average adult reading speed is 200–250 words per minute for comprehension. Academic reading (dense text requiring careful processing) is typically 100–150 wpm. A 3,000-word paper takes roughly 20 minutes to read carefully — useful to know when estimating how long your marker will spend with your submission.
Can I use this for checking application essay limits?
