How percentage calculations work

A percentage is simply a ratio or a fraction where the denominator is always 100. To find the percentage of marks obtained, divide your score by the total marks and multiply by 100.

Percentage = (Score / Total) × 100

How do I find a percentage increase?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide that difference by the original value, and multiply by 100.

How to calculate percentage

A percentage expresses one number as a fraction of another, multiplied by 100. There are four common percentage calculations students need regularly:

Calculation type Formula Example
What % is A of B?(A ÷ B) × 10036 of 48 → 75%
X% of a number(X ÷ 100) × number15% of 80 → 12
% increase((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 10060 to 75 → +25%
% decrease((Old − New) ÷ Old) × 10080 to 60 → −25%

Percentage in academic contexts

In academic settings, the most common use is converting raw marks to a percentage: (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100. If you scored 67 on a test out of 80, your percentage is (67 ÷ 80) × 100 = 83.75%.

Percentage is also used to calculate weighted course grades — each component's percentage score is multiplied by its weight and summed. See the Assignment Weight Calculator for the full weighted grade calculation.

Converting between percentages and GPA

If your institution reports marks as percentages and you need to express them as a GPA — for international applications, scholarships, or study abroad — use the Percentage to GPA Converter for instant conversion across 10+ grading scales, or the GPA to Percentage Converter to go the other direction.

What percentage is a passing grade?

It depends on the institution and country. In the US, 60% (a D) is typically the minimum passing mark, though many programs require 70% or higher for a C. In India, 35–40% is a common minimum for passing a subject. In the UK, 40% is the usual pass mark for undergraduate courses. Always check your specific course syllabus — some professional programs (nursing, engineering, medicine) set higher subject-specific minimums.

How do I calculate my overall percentage for a semester?

If all subjects carry equal weight, simply average the percentages. If subjects have different credit weightings, multiply each subject's percentage by its credit value, sum the products, then divide by total credits. This is the same weighted-average logic as GPA — the CGPA Calculator does this for you if you enter your subject marks.

How do I calculate a percentage increase in my GPA?

Use the percentage increase formula: ((New GPA − Old GPA) ÷ Old GPA) × 100. If your GPA went from 2.8 to 3.2, that's ((3.2 − 2.8) ÷ 2.8) × 100 = 14.3% improvement. This is useful for framing academic progress on resumes and scholarship applications.

What is the difference between percentage and percentile?

Percentage is your score relative to the maximum possible marks. Percentile is your rank relative to other students — if you're in the 85th percentile, you scored higher than 85% of test-takers. A 70% score could put you in the 90th percentile if the class performed poorly, or the 20th percentile if the class performed exceptionally well. Both figures appear on academic records and standardised test score reports.
