India Grading System: CGPA and the 10-Point Scale

How India's 10-point CGPA scale works, the UGC ×9.5 percentage formula, and how to convert Indian grades for graduate school applications abroad.

India's 10-point CGPA system

Most Indian universities — including those under UGC (University Grants Commission) regulations — use a 10-point CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) scale, introduced as the standard following UGC guidelines in 2009–2012. On this scale, 10.0 is the maximum, and the minimum passing threshold varies by institution but is typically 4.0 or 5.0 out of 10.

The standard UGC grade-point table is:

Letter Grade Grade Points (out of 10) Percentage range Description
O (Outstanding)1090–100%Exceptional
A+ (Excellent)980–89%Excellent
A (Very Good)870–79%Very Good
B+ (Good)760–69%Good
B (Above Average)655–59%Above Average
C (Average)550–54%Average
P (Pass)445–49%Pass
F (Fail)0Below 45%Fail

Note: individual universities may use slightly different grade boundaries. IITs and NITs, for instance, sometimes use a 10-point scale with finer grade divisions (e.g., a grade of 9.5 is possible). Always check your institution's official grade card structure.

Converting CGPA to percentage (UGC formula)

The UGC's official formula for converting CGPA to percentage is:

Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

So a CGPA of 8.5 converts to (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%. However, many Indian universities use an even simpler formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

This second formula is used by universities like Mumbai University (MU) and follows AICTE guidance. For example: 8.0 CGPA × 9.5 = 76%.

The two formulas can produce meaningfully different results, which is why you should always confirm which formula your specific institution uses before reporting a percentage to employers or for applications. The GPA to Percentage Converter supports both formulas.

Converting Indian CGPA to US GPA (4.0 scale)

For international applications — graduate school in the US, Canada, or Australia — you'll need to convert your 10-point CGPA to the US 4.0 scale. A common approximation:

Indian CGPA (10-pt) Approx. US GPA (4.0) US equivalent
9.0 – 10.03.7 – 4.0A / A+
8.0 – 8.993.3 – 3.7B+ / A−
7.0 – 7.992.7 – 3.3B / B+
6.0 – 6.992.0 – 2.7C / B−
5.0 – 5.991.3 – 2.0C− / D+
Below 5.0Below 1.3D / F

CBSE and school-level grading

At the school level, CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) uses a separate grading scheme for Classes 9–12. The CBSE scale awards grades A1 through E based on marks obtained:

Marks Range Grade Grade Points
91–100A110
81–90A29
71–80B18
61–70B27
51–60C16
41–50C25
33–40D4
Below 33E (Fail)

CBSE's CGPA is calculated by averaging the grade points across all subjects excluding the 6th additional subject. To convert CBSE CGPA to percentage, the board's formula is simply CGPA × 9.5.

IIT and NIT grading systems

India's premier engineering institutions — IITs and NITs — use a 10-point scale but with more granular grade points than the UGC standard. IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, for example, award grade points of 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2, and 0 (corresponding to AA, AB, BB, BC, CC, CD, DD, II/W/X, and FF). The Semester Performance Index (SPI) and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) replace the terms semester GPA and CGPA at most IITs.

For graduate school applications abroad, a CPI of 8.0+ from an IIT is generally treated as equivalent to a 3.7+ US GPA by most admissions committees, though formal evaluation policies vary by university.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CGPA in India?

On the 10-point UGC scale, a CGPA of 8.0 and above is generally considered excellent and equivalent to a first-class distinction. 7.0–7.9 is a strong result (first class). 6.0–6.9 is second class. For competitive graduate admissions abroad, 8.5+ is typically the target, though students from IITs and NITs may be evaluated differently given institutional prestige.

Is 7.5 CGPA good for MS abroad?

It depends on the program and university. For top US universities (MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon), 8.5+ is more competitive. For mid-tier US or Canadian universities, 7.5–8.0 with strong GRE scores and relevant research experience can be sufficient. Many universities explicitly state a minimum of 6.5 or 7.0 on a 10-point scale, which is a floor, not a target.

How do I convert my percentage to CGPA for Indian universities?

Using the most common formula: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. So 75% becomes 75 ÷ 9.5 ≈ 7.89 CGPA. Use the Percentage to GPA Converter for instant results with different formula options.

Do Indian companies check CGPA during placements?

Yes. Most large Indian corporates, MNCs, PSUs, and tech companies set a minimum CGPA cutoff for campus placements — typically 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0 depending on the company and role. Some top firms (consulting, finance, top-tier IT) set 7.5 or higher. CGPA acts as a screening filter at resume stage; interview performance matters more afterward.

Why do some Indian universities use percentage and not CGPA?

The shift to CGPA was recommended by UGC in the 2009–2013 period, but adoption has been uneven. Many state universities, autonomous colleges, and older institutions still issue mark sheets and percentage-based transcripts. CBSE adopted CGPA for board exams but reverted to marks-based reporting for Class X and XII results in 2017. If your transcript is percentage-based, use the Percentage to GPA tool to convert for applications.
