How the attendance goal formula works

Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100. If you currently have 28 out of 40 classes (70%), and your minimum is 75% on a final total of 50 classes, you need to attend at least (0.75 × 50) − 28 = 9 of the remaining 10 classes to recover.

This calculator solves that equation for you: enter your classes attended so far, total held so far, your minimum required percentage, and total classes expected by semester end — and it tells you exactly how many of the remaining sessions you must attend.

Recovery scenarios at a glance

Current % Classes held Classes remaining Must attend (to hit 75%)

60%4010Not possible
60%302018 of 20
70%4086 of 8
80%40100 of 10 (safe)

When recovery is not mathematically possible given the remaining classes, the only options are seeking condonation from your institution or applying for a medical/exceptional absence exemption. Contact your academic advisor as early as possible — retroactive requests are usually denied.

Track each subject separately

Do not track only your overall attendance average. A 90% average across four subjects hides a 65% in one — and that subject's exam eligibility is at risk regardless of the others. Run this calculator per subject, especially for any course where you have missed multiple consecutive sessions.

For a full picture of your current standing in a subject, use the Attendance Calculator — it shows your current percentage, how many classes you can still safely miss, and your recovery target all in one view.

What is the typical minimum attendance requirement?

Most universities mandate 75% attendance for exam eligibility, particularly in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) and the Middle East. Some programs — medical, nursing, engineering labs — require 85% or higher. Individual professors at US, UK, and Australian universities often set their own policies per course, especially for labs, studios, and seminars. Always check your course syllabus, not just the general university policy.

Can I recover from low attendance mid-semester?

Only if enough classes remain. The table above shows some scenarios. Enter your exact numbers in this calculator to see whether recovery is possible. If it is not, contact your academic advisor immediately — condonation applications (where the university waives the attendance bar for a documented reason) typically have deadlines before the final examination period.

Does online attendance count the same as in-person?

It depends entirely on your institution's policy. Live online sessions often count; recorded sessions usually do not. Check your course syllabus or ask your instructor explicitly — do not assume.

What if my low attendance is due to illness?

Most universities allow medical absences to be formally excused and excluded from the attendance count, but only if you submit documentation within a specified window (usually 7–14 days of the absence). Submit the paperwork promptly — retroactive requests submitted at semester end are typically rejected. Keep copies of all documentation you submit.
